Thursday the 11-2 Kansas City Chiefs will play host to the 10-3 Los Angeles Chargers. Arguably this is the biggest game of the year, with a win the Chiefs more or less lock up the AFC West and the number one seed in the conference, and with a loss, they risk losing the division and falling to the 5 seed in the playoffs. Patrick Mahomes is setting the league on fire on pace to break the single-season touchdown record. Mahomes is arguably the front runner for MVP right now, back in October I said Patrick Mahomes might just be a wizard, now it is safe to say he is a confirmed wizard.
At 10-3, the Chargers dropped their season opener to us in Los Angeles 38-28. Both teams had fairly high expectations heading into the season, but fans of both of these teams probably could not have foreseen this kind of success and the opening win for the Chiefs proved to be crucial for them in regards to playoff seeding. The game should be a close one and more importantly an exciting shootout. The Chiefs are favored by 3.5, and a wise man should bet that the Chargers will cover that spread.
Offense: The Chargers offense is no slouch, but the Chiefs have the offensive edge whoever they play. Mahomes, Hill, and Kelce should have no problem moving the ball against a Chargers defense that surrendered 38 points to the Chiefs week one. The key for the Chiefs on offense will be to establish the run early to open up opportunities to look to Tyreek Hill and Chris Conley deep later on.
Defense: Clear advantage goes to the Chargers on defense. It’s no secret that the atrocious secondary has been the Chiefs achilles heel all season long. Los Angeles also boasts the 8th best defense in the NFL. The question of the game is will defense even matter as it has proved not to in so many other games for Kansas City this season.
X-Factors: Chris Jones/ Dee Ford/ Justin Houston: If Ford, Houston and Jones get to Phillip Rivers enough to significantly neutralize the Chargers offense Kansas City will win this game. The pass rush has shown flashes of brilliance this season, and will be the key to victory on Thursday.
