Located at 2 E 59th St in Brookside, The Children’s Place is an organization that helps develop children aged 6 weeks to 6 years that have undergone immense abuse and neglect. Rockhurst has had a strong presence at The Children’s Place every year for Senior Service. In 1976, the public awareness and conversation of child abuse was just beginning. Because of this impetus, The Children’s Place was founded in 1978.
I chose this organization because I wanted to get out of my comfort zone. I normally work well with kids, but I really have no prior experience dealing with toddlers and infants. I have also heard that many of the teachers are very firm and abrasive, which will be a good learning experience on how to deal with people of authority. I’m also working with classmates that I don’t get to see a lot during the day, and it makes me happy that I will be forming bonds and growing closer with these classmates.
“All of my siblings have worked in The Children’s Place, so I felt obligated to continue the tradition,” said Nate Lueke. “I feel prepared to work there, and I think it will be a lot of fun. I feel like so much of who we are as teenagers and adults starts with how we developed as children, and we need to do what we can to help these children become successful adults.”
