This past Friday, October 20, the Rockhurst Hawklets took on the Lee’s Summit North Broncos in the first round of the Missouri State District Championships. The Hawklets ended up 7-0 victors in what turned out to be a defensively focused game.
The Rockhurst defense provided their first shutout win of the season in what was a back-and-forth type of game. The defense made many big stands, including a red zone stop, which forced a miss field goal by Lee’s Summit North. Other big defensive plays of the game included senior Chris Castrop’s diving interception in the 2nd quarter, and the forcing a three-and-out with only 4:06 left to play in the game.
There was not much offense on display between the two teams throughout the game. The only score of the game came on Rockhurst senior Matt O’Keefe’s scoring a two-yard rush in the second quarter, with the extra point added on by senior Eric Angrisano. “I thought we were going to need more than one, but I’ll take it. A win’s a win, and we got another week.” Senior quarterback Derek Green said. Green’s keeper on fourth-and-one allowed Rockhurst to retain possession of the ball and run out the clock and claim a win against the Broncos.
The Hawklets advance to the District Semifinals next Friday at 7:00 against Lee’s Summit West.
