The Summer of 2017 marked a great time for cinema. It launched the releases of very big and very anticipated movies such as The Emoji Movie and Cars: 3. In this top ten, we will be reviewing the top ten movies of Summer ‘17. This list is compiled by the reviews of Rotten Tomatoes, personal experience, and the opinions of your fellow classmates
10.Baywatch: 2017’s Baywatch provides a funny, action-packed adventure to keep crime off of the beach. Zac Efron’s Matt Brody and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s Mitch Buchannon butt heads frequently throughout the film, creating a love hate relationship that grows throughout the movie. Overall, Baywatch is a funny, action-packed fun time that critics didn’t love so much, but the audience absolutely loved it, disregarding the critics.
9.Alien: Covenant: Alien: Covenant is a redesign of the past films, creating a terrifying, tense great thriller with in-depth characters, a good plot, and a terrifying Antagonist. This installment tries a little too hard to make the audience laugh, falling short on some jokes, and putting dry jokes out there as well. All things aside, Alien: Covenant is a great thriller, keeping the audience on the edge of their seats, giving a good overall movie experience.
8.The Dark Tower: The Dark Tower is a very gritty, intense, and dark movie about a boy discovering a rift to another dimension. Idris Elba’s character, Roland Deschain, is a gunslinger locked battling Matthew McConaughey’s character, Walter O’Dim. Tom Taylor plays Jake Chambers, a troubled teen who discovers his psychic powers, which leads Roland Deschain to find him and help him defeat Walter O’Dim.
7.The Mummy: The Mummy features the great Tom Cruise, who plays Nick Morton, on a journey to find timeless artifacts from ancient dig sites and excavation sites. He stumbles upon the mummy’s tomb when him and his partner come under fire in the Middle East. The Mummy provides a short, yet good experience, led by Tom Cruise and Sofia Boutella, who plays the ancient mummy, Ahmet.
6.Wonder Woman: Wonder Woman brought the DC cinematic universe back on the map with this hit. DC has a past of very subpar movies that were very anticipated that just flopped hard. This movie hopefully will get DC back on its feet. With the Justice League movie coming out, this can mark a good beginning to a new era for DC movies. Wonder Woman is a great movie and a must see for DC fans, a great superhero movie with an amazing plot.
5.Spider-Man: Homecoming: This reinstallment of Spider-Man sees Tom Holland as the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. Peter Parker is perfectly portrayed as a misunderstood teen with another side being the famous web slinging superhero. Certain parts of the movie focus a little too much on the backstory of the minor characters. Though there are minor details, the overall movie is a great watch and a great time for people of all ages.
4.Logan: Marvel’s Logan is a fantastic end to a beautifully made character and marks the beginning for the new Wolverine, X-23. Throughout the movie, Logan struggles through old age, as his healing factor is affected, he grows weaker and weaker. This movie also shows a very old professor X, who is very sick and close to death. This movie is action packed, full of fun, and a rollercoaster of emotions.
3.Baby Driver: Ansel Elgort plays driver phenom Baby. Baby got caught up in very bad things as a kid, stealing a Mercedes from the wrong person, Kevin Spacey’s character, who plays Baby’s boss in the movie. Baby Driver is a very good movie with a great plot and very in depth characters that you make a connection with at the beginning of the movie,
2.Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: The sequel to the first Guardians of the Galaxy is a completely different type of movie from the first, expanding on the elements that made the first movie good, and introducing new ones that keep the eyes glued to the screen for the whole movie. Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, and Bradley Cooper make the Guardians of the Galaxy come alive through the screen, with amazing performances by all of them. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 should be a movie that everyone should see, superhero fan or not.
1.War for the Planet of the Apes: The much anticipated War for the Planet of the Apes lived up to the hype it had been building up since the trailer months before the movie. Ape leader Caesar, portrayed by Andy Serkis gives a wonderful performance captivating the people who saw the movie and giving them an experience. The plot is unmatched, making even the slightest details important. Woody Harrelson played the relentless Colonel, who enslaved all of the apes with exception to few refugees which included Caesar. The fight to free all of the enslaved apes is a long and dangerous task which leads to a surprising ending that no one expected. War for the Planet of the Apes was this summer’s blockbuster movie that did not disappoint. From the beautifully made CGI to the plot, and even the stunning character development, War for the Planet of the Apes will be a great movie for a very very long time, an instant classic.
