After coming up short in last year’s District Championships, the Rockhurst baseball team is off to a fine start.
The Hawklets won each of their first five games before falling 8-7 to Olathe Northwest March 27, showcasing a powerful offense the whole way. Following nail-biters against Blue Springs (3-2), Liberty North (7-6) and Oak Park (3-1) in the Metro Leadoff March 18-20, Rockhurst has recorded blowout victories over Park Hill and Liberty, outscoring the two schools a combined 19-3.
“We’re hitting the ball well, our pitching has helped us compete,” Head Coach Mr. Jim DeGraw said. “I can’t really complain.”
Last season, Rockhurst registered a 21-9 record before falling to Lee’s Summit in the district finals. Rockhurst has not gotten past Districts the previous three seasons, and going forward, the team hopes to break the streak.
Asked about who he is counting on the lead the club to success, Mr. DeGraw pointed to the upperclassmen.
“We always count on our seniors,” he said. “Guys like Max Hutlett, Hunter Sands, Ty Dalinghause and Jackson Moore have been in the program and we expect them to take charge.”
