As the winter months draw to a close, so do our winter sports. The basketball team finished their season with a record of 11-13, losing in the second round of the district tournament. Hockey completed their season with a record of 12-10-1. The wrestling team had three members qualify to the state tournament, with two placing.
The basketball team has two seniors prepared to take the next step in their athletic and academic careers in college. Ross Elder has committed to a preferred walk-on offer from Kansas State while Carter Selzer has committed to a preferred walk-on spot at the University of Michigan. Chris Teahan has not commented on his future plans regarding collegiate athletics.
The wrestling team has two athletes committed to collegiate wrestling. Cameron Valdiviez has committed to the United States Air Force Academy and his twin brother Colin Valdiviez has committed to Northwestern University. Colin placed 4th in the state of Missouri during his sophomore year, 1st in state his Junior year and 2nd his Senior year.
Colin also won the Panam Championships in the 54 kg weight class this past summer. Cameron placed 3rd his freshman year, 6th his sophomore year, 1st in both his junior and senior years. Together they have a combined total of 359 wins and 23 losses.
The Hockey team, has two seniors committed to playing in college. Danny Powers has signed with Xavier University in Cincinnati and Tommy Rasmussen has committed to KU. Both are looking forward to their unique opportunity to advance their athletic careers.
Rockhurst’s winter sports concluded with strong finishes in late-season action. These successes will hopefully result in future prosperity for sports here at Rockhurst and their respective athletes.
