Last Friday was complete domination for Rockhurst (4-1), as they shutout Blue Springs South (1-4) 42-0. Rockhurst controlled the game from the opening kickoff, scoring just six minutes into the game. Senior starting quarterback TJ Green was a large part of the Hawklet’s success, with four touchdown passes in the first half.
The Hawklet’s showed huge improvement in their defense, which has been struggling of late, allowing 38 points in the last two games. Rockhurst has recently relied on their offense to overwhelm the opposition, but against the Jaguars they were able to command both sides of the football.
All but seven points came in the first half for the Hawklets, as they opened up with a 25 yard touchdown pass to senior Lance Boehm, and then a 20 yard pass to senior Will Bazzle with slightly less than 5 minutes left in the first quarter. Bazzle had a field day against an overpowered Blue Springs South defense, and was able to catch two huge touchdown passes of 38 and 45 yards, respectively, in the second quarter. This came after a Kiah Kitchen rushing touchdown for 44 yards barely three minutes into the second quarter.
In the second half, Rockhurst began to rest their starters to prevent any unnecessary injuries in a clearly lopsided matchup; something the coaching staff has been hoping to do to in order get some players lower on the depth chart more experience. This fact only displayed the potential the Hawklet’s defense has to dictate a game, regardless of the players in it; they just need to be consistent to continue this dominance of the opponent. The offense was relatively quiet in the second half, scoring only once with a 3 yard rushing touchdown from backup sophomore quarterback Chance Mays with about four minutes left in the game.
Rockhurst will face Blue Springs this Friday, one of the more anticipated games of the season for the Hawklets. The game begins at 7:00 P.M. at Rockhurst High School.
