Varsity soccer beats Rock Bridge 5-1

Final Score: Rockhurst 5, Rockbridge 1

Winning their second regular season match against Columbia Rock Bridge by a score of 5 to 1, the Rockhurst Hawklets have begun the season with two consecutive wins.

After a slow offensive start with little possession and almost no shots on goal, the Hawklets found life when senior Jordan Evans was able to find the net with the help of a throw in from senior Matthew Martel. The Hawklets gained momentum. “Once we began winning our restarts and controlling the ball, we were able to get the offense going,” senior mid-fielder Robert DeWitt said.

Another goal was tacked on with a header from junior Keaton Schieffer off a throw in from Martel, taking the Hawklets to halftime with a 2, nil lead over Rockbridge.

Unlike the start of the match, Rockhurst came out of half time with total ball control and offensive domination. The offensive pressure allowed for another Hawklet goal from junior Cole McLagan on an assist from senior Robert DeWitt.

Except for a quick run by Rockbridge which resulted in a near goal, the ball deflecting off of the goal post, Rockhurst was in total control of the second half. Adding to the lead, junior Keaton Scheiffer was fouled in the box and converted a penalty kick, putting the Hawklets up 4, nil.

In the 71st minute of the game, Rock Bridge was finally able to put together an offensive push and score their first goal of the game. Rockhurst quickly countered with another offensive drive culminating in a goal scored by senior Robert DeWitt, securing a victory for Hawklets.

The Hawklets will play Raymore Peculiar at home Tuesday at 7:30.
